BUT, I thought it was cool the writer actually incorporated these things into Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, when prior to this discovery, I thought she had just made her own concoction. (Then I realized Alchemy was related to occult practices, so, thus the symbols). Not something related to spiritualism or witchcraft. I was taught that alchemy was like an old science, like chemistry. I was really surprised because alchemy was listed as an occult practice. I eventually went to wikipedia (yes, it’s not the most reliable source, but it’s a nice place to look because it links to other sources). The other day I was looking up the word “occult” to decide if I wanted one of my characters to say it (as part of a passing joke). I figured it was just something the writer brought into her version of alchemy, plus, they looked cool. Okay, when I was watching FMA Brotherhood, I imagined what it would be like if someone walked in and saw me watching it, because to do alchemy, the characters draw symbols with chalk, and they kind of look like satanic or witchcraft symbols or something–even though the story is by no means satanic (just like Harry Potter isn’t).
